Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM)
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is the central bank and monetary authority of Malaysia, responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy, issuing currency, managing foreign reserves, and promoting a stable and efficient financial system. Operating in the public sector within the financial services and regulatory industry, BNM oversees banking, payment systems and financial market infrastructure, supervises financial institutions, and develops policy frameworks for conventional and Islamic finance to serve households, businesses and the government. Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, the institution has national reach while engaging extensively with international organizations and peer central banks. As the country’s central bank, BNM occupies the leading policy and regulatory position in Malaysia’s financial sector and is a key participant in international fora such as the IMF, Bank for International Settlements and regional ASEAN financial cooperation. Distinguishing characteristics include its role in developing Malaysia’s Islamic finance architecture, stewardship of monetary stability through episodes such as the Asian financial crisis and COVID-19 policy response, and active work on financial-sector digitalisation, fintech regulation and climate-related financial risk. As a statutory public institution, conventional private funding rounds do not apply; its resources derive from statutory provisions and government arrangements. Recent initiatives emphasize digital payments, regulatory sandboxes for fintech, strengthening macroprudential frameworks and advancing sustainable finance policies.
